How do you build a timber deck on ground that is not level?

It depends on what "not level" means. If the ground is uneven, with bumps, dips or differences in level, adjustable pedestals are enough: each pedestal is adjusted independently, to the height needed at its position. You can combine several height ranges on the same deck to cover the gap between the highest and lowest points.

If the base has a regular slope, such as a concrete slab or a roof terrace with a drainage fall, choose self-levelling pedestals. Their head tilts to follow the slope: the joist stays flat and bears on the whole head, whereas a standard pedestal on a slope would only support it on one edge.

In all cases, the ground must be stable and load-bearing. On natural ground, strip, compact and add a layer of gravel before laying the pedestals.

How do you correct the slope of a timber deck?

Two levers work together. The first is height: pedestals at the low point are set higher than those at the high point, to bring the tops of the joists to the same level. Work out the difference to make up by multiplying the slope by the length (a 2% slope over 4 m gives 8 cm), then choose pedestal ranges that cover this difference.

What is the Jouplast EASIO range?

EASIO is Jouplast's range of self-levelling pedestals for timber and composite decks. Made in France from recycled polypropylene, these pedestals have a tilting head that makes up slopes of up to 5% and takes joists 40 to 80 mm wide.

The range comes in four heights: 40-55, 55-80, 80-130 and 130-230 mm. Adjustment is to the millimetre, by hand or with a drill using the dedicated bit, which saves time on large areas. Two tabs centre the joist and tighten against it when you turn the pedestal head.

The shape of the head also takes two joists side by side. This is useful at board joints, where each board end must be screwed to its own joist. EASIO pedestals carry a 10-year warranty and withstand UV, frost and temperatures from -30 °C to +60 °C.
