Can you build a terrace on sloping ground?

Yes, that is exactly what the self-leveling pedestal is for: its pivoting head takes up the incline of the substrate (generally up to about 5%) to bring the slab back to horizontal. Beyond that, it is combined with a slope corrector.

What is the difference between a fixed pedestal and a self-leveling pedestal?

The fixed pedestal has a flat head and a non-adjustable height: it suits an already level substrate. The self-leveling pedestal has a movable head that tilts to compensate for a slope and keep the slab level, without shimming.

What is a self-leveling pedestal?

It is a terrace support with a pivoting head (movable plate or ball joint) that adapts to the incline of the ground. The slab laid on top stays level automatically, which makes leveling on a sloping substrate much easier.

When should you use self-leveling pedestals?

On any substrate with a slope: a concrete slab with a drainage fall, an old terrace, slightly sloping ground. They also save adjustment time. On a perfectly level substrate, a standard adjustable pedestal is enough.

How do self-leveling pedestals work?

The head sits on a joint that tilts freely up to a certain angle. When you lay the slab, the head aligns itself horizontally while the base follows the slope of the ground.

How much does a self-leveling terrace pedestal cost?

It is slightly more expensive than a simple adjustable pedestal, because of the pivoting head. Self-leveling pedestals generally start at around €4 each. The extra cost is offset by the installation time saved on a sloping substrate.

What slope can a self-leveling pedestal take up?

Self-leveling heads commonly compensate for slopes of up to 5%, which easily covers the standard drainage fall of a terrace, generally between 1 and 2%.

Self-leveling or adjustable: which one should you choose?

The adjustable pedestal is set in height; the self-leveling pedestal also corrects the incline. If your substrate is level, an adjustable pedestal is enough. If it has a drainage fall or irregularities, the self-leveling pedestal will save you a lot of time.

Can you still adjust the height after laying the slabs?

Yes, on most models, using an adjustment key inserted through the joint between the slabs. This is very handy for correcting a slight defect without taking the terrace apart.
